Characteristics of a True Hero Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Characteristics of a True Hero - Essay Example This depiction of a hero is only a myth, in reality, a hero is an individual who has abundant amount of strength that is physical as well as emotional in nature, who is brave enough to put his own life at stake for the wellbeing of others, has the ability to stand against pain and is very humble in nature. In movies, several heroes such as the superman, batman and the ironman have been depicted saving the world and human beings tend to acknowledge these heroes with appreciation (Oropeza 5). In the real world there are several heroes around human beings, but they are simply ignored and their importance is never realized. Body Heroes come in all shapes and sizes and they represent different professions, even a common man and a simple man can even be a hero. An individual is not born as a hero; he develops into a hero as his life basses on. People such as cops, fighters of fire, military officials, lawyers and well as doctors can even be regarded as heroes if they exhibit characteristic s of a true hero and if they make the lives of other human beings better through their fearless nature and valor (Jackson 81). An arm official fighting on the border does not fight because he is a psychopath who has an eye for killing other individuals; his main purpose of fighting is the wellbeing and safeguard of the people of the nation he is representing. Both the cops as well as firefighter have repeatedly risked their lives to ensure that the people of their society are safe. Individuals who are on death bed and experiencing tremendous amount of pain due to their health condition and are still fighting against their health diseases without taking up mercy killing as an option to relief pain are heroes (Walsh 1). The most important characteristic that an individual requires to be recognized as a hero is bravery. Heroes have a special condition called bravery because they stand against their darkest fears and are courageous enough to continue fighting even if they fear that thei r attempts may fail. Heroes tend to be determined in nature, they never back down and continue to fight even if they fail during attempts (Rabieh 163). A hero is a person who makes several moves before he finally achieves what he started working out for. This is because attempts to perform a heroic act can fail again and again, but a true hero is one who continues to keep attempting to win even though previous attempts may have failed. A true hero is one who is dedicated to a particular cause and he is dedicated towards that cause in order to protect the interest of others and not to protect his own interest (Mosse 52). He believes that he has a higher purpose and continues to operate to attain that particular purpose. For example Martin Luther King Jr. was a brave hero who stood against slavery at the time when black Americans were suppressed and being killed for standing against the whites. He was an individual who believed in attaining rights for the blacks in a non-violent manne r and continued to make public speeches and led non-violent marches for over 2,500 times in order to help the black Americans attain their right of voting, equal opportunity and civil rights (Moral Heroes 1). He continued to march and use non-violent measures to protest even though his marches were strongly condemned by the police who tried to stop him by arresting him. He was a believer of non-violent methods of protest and he believed that violent measures were wrong and cannot be used to stand against wrong doings. A hero is one who scores high in endurance and who does not give up

Conflict Resolution Paper - Coursework Example The message had not been replied after half an hour. I decided to write her another text message; this time round it was worse because it included abuses. Still she did not reply. After 2 hours, my anger had cooled down; I decided to call my roommateââ¬â¢s boyfriend to inform me why his girlfriend was not answering my message. I was shocked to learn from the boyfriend that my roommate had gone unconscious before they left the room and rushed her to a medical facility. I suddenly remembered that my roommate was epileptic. The boyfriend confessed of the mess in the room, he confessed that he was trying to look for her medical records and because of the hurry, he ended up disarranging everything. I felt so ashamed to learn that I had to confess to both my roommate and her boyfriend afterwards. If I had to find myself in the same situation in future, I would first of all wait for her to return, ask her why it happened before reacting (Van de Vliert and Euwema 679). I will never let my emotions dominate me next time I find myself in

A) Critically examination of the case study of the virgin train. Relationship vision and culture of the company: As before all the trains network in the hand of Britain government, they appointed a separate body for the management and handling of the railway activities known as Britain rail. But since 1997 virgin train operating complete in private sector, the quality and management of the virgin train is now so better. The routes of train go through Manchester, Glasgow, and Birmingham and many others cites of the United Kingdom. The new chief executive of the virgin train has announced a new vision for a company which has with great extent support the company in different situation. Vision and mission statement of the virgin train: Vision: a statement is some time called a picture of the company in the future. Vision statement is the company aspiration, their frame work for all strategic planning of the company. The vision statement answers the question where do we want to go. For example the vision statement of the eye clinic in America is our vision is to take care of your vision. And the vision of the adamjee pharmaceuticals is the name you have learn to trust. Mission: mission statement is a brief description of a company fundamental purpose. Mission statement give answer the question why do we exist. The vision of virgin train is very clear, it has very close relation to the all activities of the virgin trains, the basic and fundamental aim of the virgin train is to achieve the customer satisfaction and coordination among employees, for this reason they have divided the whole activities of the organization into group they have developed separate region for controlling the activities of the virgin train and each region is handed over to manager for best control. Each region of the company is seeking to maximize the quality of the service to customer and other objectives of the company. Tony Collins the chief executive the company has well established the vision of the company which has differentiated the company with others, the main theme of the vision of virgin train is to empower the employees to take responsibility and ownership of their performance. This vision has worked with great extent. And have played an important role in transforming the vision in culture of the company . Vision helps the organization to meet the objective and target with some core values. The vision of the virgin train is To become the most safe, consistent, reliable and profitable of the train operating franchises in a climate that respects different views and people need not be afraid to be open and honest. If we see the vision of the virgin train it is clear form the above that it set out the concept of profitability, safety and responsibility and customer services and relation with them. Now we will see that how the vision and culture of the virgin train have some relation or not. Culture is the way of working style in the organization which is clearly study from the behavior of he employees, culture is the way of working activities, that how the manager behave with employees while they are doing their activities. And how manger treats the subordinates. Culture also depicts the procedures and system for activities and care abut the customer because customers are the ultimate king of the business. The virgin train vision and culture have strong relation ship becaus e the vision of the virgin trains have provided a solid base for culture of the company, as we have studied in this case study of the virgin train that they have now divided the activities in different region and they have move from their traditional concept to new one is the customer is the priority. We can see the culture example how they have managed the culture from their vision, the provision of toys in waiting rooms to keep childrens happy. Virgin train also encouraging recycling in all offices. They have also encouraging employees to take part in communication and give suggestion and share ideas of important issues and challenges. B) What influence organization culture in change management. First of all we must shortly define that what is meant by culture, organizational culture is a system of shared meaning held by members that distinguishes the organization form other organizations. (Stephens). Culture is also consists of norm, values, attitudes, beliefs, opinion and custom and traditions of the employees while doing work in the organization how they feeling and how they finding the place for their selves. Factors influencing organization culture: The following elements or factors can be sued to influence the organization culture. a) Control system b) organization structures c) power structures d) the paradigm e) stories and myths f) symbols and g) rituals and routines a) Control system: The system to monitor that what is going on in the organization. b) Organization structures: The hierarchies of the organization, the way through which the work can be carried on, the lines of reporting etc c) Power structures. What is power based. Who will be responsible for making decision, and how power can be widely spread. d) The paradigm; the organization mission. Values, vision, what it about, and why it exists. e) Stories and myths. Events must be building up, and what is important in organization and what is not, f) Symbols. The logos and design of the organization but it also be extended. g) Rituals and routines. Meeting of management, reports of the board and so one. C) Contribution of the Organization Structure to the achievement of the Change process. Organization structure may define as organizational structure is a system of arrangement, the pattern or network of relation, between the various positions and their holders. David Buchanan.) All organization has some aims and objectives. To achieve those objectives all organization makes provision to regulate such activities, which contribute to the achievement of the goals. Such allocation of resources, supervision and coordination among the organization elements are developed to constitute the organization structure. What may be the structure of the organization if it is matrix or project, free form but with out proper structure of the organization activities no change process can be best implemented in the organization because organization structure makes it easy to understand the whole activities of the organization and which help in the change process. So it is very important for the management to develop such structure which regulates the activities of the organization and to achieve the targets. Peter Drucker suggests some principles for designing organization structure these are; clarity economy direction of vision understanding by individual of his own task and the task of whole decision making stability and adaptability and perpetuation and self renewal these principles serves to support the designing in the organization structure, if these are follows so with no doubt one can develop good and stable structure which may be supportive in the change management process, as we have seen from case study that how virgin trains have developed the regional structure according to the vision of the company. Elements of the Organization Structures: Five main elements of the organization structure are People Technology Objectives of the organization Environment e) Structure of the company itself. Organization can be viewed as a complex system, which consist the above variables. These variables mutually interrelated with each other and constitute the organizational structure and these variables are affected by environment such as social, political, economical and environmental. Types of the Organizational Structure: Line structure, Staff structure, Functional structures, Matrix structure and Project base. Designing the Organizational Structure: There are many type of organization and every organization has a different structure. Different people are placed in different position in different department of the organizations. Division of grouping and task into functions, departments, sections, and units constitutes the organizational structure. As virgin train adapted the structure for carrying the activities of the trains, they have divided the region and assign each region to a manager for handling the activities and every employees of that region are responsible to report to that specific manger. Departmentalization: Departmentalization refers to the process of grouping together employees who having common supervisor and resources. In simple word departmentalization is the division of the organization into different wings and every wing has common goal and responsible for any work done. An organization may be departmentalizing on the following basis. Function basis e.g. research, finance, and sale etc Product basis e.g. a college on subject base Customer base e. g bank, consumer loan, and business loan departments. Geographic base Time base e.g. one shift, two shift etc Now it is prove form case study of the virgin trains that how organization structure achieved the change process in that specific area, all the activities of the virgin trains have designed in such a way to achieve the customer satisfaction and employees coordination D). Strategies of the virgin trains: As clear form the case study of the virgin train that the company has adopted two main core strategies customer oriented strategy and employees or worker oriented strategies both strategies have developed the virgin trains, because in virgin trains giving priority to customers they are considering that customers are the kings of today market they are better decided about the failure and success of the business concern, and the company all activities are going round with customers so by adopting this customer priority strategy the virgin trains are now attempting to have different position to its rival or competitors, and the other one strategy which have adopted by virgin train is employees oriented because the virgin train is also considering that the workers are also the core point of the success of the business if worker are provided a good environment, health and safety condition, good reward system, well motivated so they can perform better and the company can achieve the goal easily. Effective of the strategies: By adopting these two core strategies the virgin trains now getting several advantages, they have achieved the customer satisfaction, and customer also have realized that the virgin trains is the only quality provider among the different other trains service provider in the Britain, because by adopting the strategy for customer the virgin trains have improved the quality of service by providing different services in different station of the Britain. They have also achieved the customer loyalty not only for short term but also for long term, which in term not maximizing the profitability of the virgin trains but also the reputation and goodwill of the company in the mind of the people. By adopting the strategies for employees they have also improved the work quality and have changed the behavior of the employees in work place which in result have brought good and effective working environment, which have great impact on the quality of services and working condition of the company. The y have also reduced the sickness levels ,the lowering staff turnover rates, have improved customer satisfaction ratings and have reduced numbers of complaint letters form the side of customer and community and also have cost saving from the implementation of this vision of virgin trains. Recommendation: The virgin trains can also improve their services by providing or adopting the following suggestion. Fare should be reasonable to affords by general customer to travel The reward system of the company should be based on employees need which will have positive result form the side of employees and will bring coordination. Fast and time arrival to destination has also the key success of any trains system in the world. Various facilities to customer in different station may also increase the reputation of the company. To design comprehensive, structured program which may also improve the virgin trains performance. A well reporting system may also be developed by the company to have best control of the activities of the company. Introduction of modern technology and system And improvement in system efficiency and productivity.

Helena Blavatsky :: Ukraine Biographies Writers Authors Essays
Helena Blavatsky Helena Blavatsky was an intriguing woman from the country of Ukraine. She could be considered a nomad for her time; however, she was not interested in finding food and shelter. Helena wanted to find those who were considered spiritualists like herself. She lived from 1831-1891 and can be considered a very influential woman from her era. Helena Petrovna Blavatsky was born August 12, 1831 in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. Her father was Colonel Peter von Hahn and her mother was Helena Andreyevna von Hahn. Colonel von Hahn was a military man fighting in Poland when Helena was born. Her mother, often hurt by her husbandââ¬â¢s absence and wrote about the turmoil of being a woman in her time. She published 8 novels by the time she faced an untimely death at the age of 27 as a highly regarded novelist. Helenaââ¬â¢s mother knew from the time she was born that she was no average child. (3, 4, 5, 6) When Helena was born she was very weak and the people around doubted she would even live. Therefore, before the baby was even 24 hours old a baptism was held. Helenaââ¬â¢s aunt, a young child, was asked to stand in as a godmother. During the ceremony, the child became restless and knocked over a candle without anyone noticing. The priest performing the baptism suffered severe burns when his robe caught fire. The people at Helenaââ¬â¢s baptism saw this as a sign. She was nicknamed Lyola because her grandparents and servants thought she had powers. (6) As a child, she had great passion for magic and the unknown. She was often found playing by the river in Ekaterinoslav. She said she was playing with the russalkas whom were green haired nymphs thought to haunt the riverbanks. When servants and other children bothered her, she threatened to have the russalkas tickle them to death. (2) While Helena, her mother, sister, and brother traveled a lot due to her fatherââ¬â¢s military position, Helena was always happiest playing with the servantsââ¬â¢ children and not the children of her rank and aristocracy.

Outline of the NEC Contract The NEC Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC) (previously the New Engineering Contract) has been developed to meet the current and future needs for a form of contract to be used in the engineering, building and construction industries. It is an improvement on existing standard contracts in a number of ways. ââ¬â¢ (NEC, 2005). a) Summary of the ethos & key aims of the contract i. Stimulus to good management The use of the NEC EC C should stimulate good management between the employers, designers, contractors and the project managers, and also make them work collaboratively to enable them to achieve their own objectives more consistently. It should also allocate the risks associated with the project between all parties clearly and simply to reduce the possibility of those risks occurring. The ECC focuses on ââ¬Ëreal timeââ¬â¢ management of the project rather than looking back at what the parties should have done. This means the programme of works should always be up to date regardless of any changes. ii. Variations A variation is a change to the contract/programme of works after the contract has been agreed. An example of a variation could be a modification to the original design of works. In this case, the designers of the works would have to issue an early warning notification to all other parties involved to ensure they all know of any extra costs or delays in works that could happen as a result of th e change. After this, ââ¬Ëthe parties are then required to meet, to seek mutually beneficial solutions to overcome these problems, and to operate a formal Risk Register of notified events. ââ¬â¢ (NEC, 2005). This change also results in a compensation event and a sum of money is usually paid to the effected parties. iii. Clear and simple languageThe NEC ECC is written in ordinary language which is clear and simple and only uses words which are in common use. This makes it easy for everyone to understand, especially those whose first language is not English or those who are not used to using formal contracts. This also makes it easier to translate into other languages. The NEC ECC also has fewer clauses than in many standard forms, uses short sentences and the use of subjective words is kept to a minimum. Also, there is no cross-referencing between clauses. b) Strengths ? ? It can be used in a wide variety of commercial situations, for any type of work and in any location. Clear and simple document which is easy to understand and follow. Nothing is getting tested in the courts so no case law is being built. c) Weaknesses Aled Rhys Hughes 200714325 2. Main Option Clauses a) List of main Option Clauses ? ? ? ? ? ? ââ¬ËA) Priced contract with activity schedule; B )Priced contract with bill of quantities; C) Target contract with activity schedule; D) Target contract with bill of quantities; E) Cost reimbursable contract; F) Management contract. (NEC, NEC3 Engineering and Construction Contract, 2005) b) Summary and Comparison of Option Clauses ? Option A: ââ¬ËProvides a priced contract where the total of the price tendered by the contractor against each activity represents the amount he will be paid for that work. ââ¬â¢ (Rowlinson, 2011). Option B: ââ¬ËProvides a priced a priced contract but this time with a bill of quantities. Under this option, the contractor is paid the actual quantity of work carried out at the rates in the bill of quantities. ( Rowlinson, 2011). Option C: ââ¬ËThe contractor tenders the prices (the target) backed by an activity schedule together with relevant percentages and rates. The percentages and rates are used in calculating the defined cost and price of work to date. ââ¬â¢ (Rowlinson, 2011). Option D: ââ¬ËMain option D follows the same approach as main option C, except that a bill of quantities is used against which the final total of the prices is re-measured. ââ¬â¢ (Rowlinson, 2011).Option E: ââ¬ËThe employer pays for all the resources utilised by the contractor to carry out the works, following a formula employing various tendered rated and percentages, subject only to the disallowing of costs resulting from the contractorââ¬â¢s inefficient use of resources. ââ¬â¢ (Rowlinson, 2011). Option F: ââ¬ËProvides a management contract option under which the contractor is paid a fee for carrying out prescribed duties. ââ¬â¢ (Rowlinson, 2011). ? ? ? ? ? The main difference between each option clause is the risk associated with each one however; the risk for the contractor and client will differ for each option clause. The contractor faces high risk if option A is used decreasing to low risk if option F is used. The client is the opposite where they face low risk if option A is used and high risk if option F is used. c) Recommendation The use of main option clause A should be adopted in the contract document for this project. This option minimises the risks associated with the project for the client and all responsibility is then placed on the contractors to complete the project on time and for the agreed price. Aled Rhys Hughes 200714325 3.Secondary Option Clauses a) 15 ââ¬ËXââ¬â¢ Secondary Options ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ââ¬ËX1: Price adjustment for inflation; X2: Changes in the law; X3: Multiple currencies; X4: Parent company guarantee; X5: Sectional Completion; X6: Bonus for early Completion; X7: Delay damages; X12: Partnering; X13: Performa nce bond; X14: Advanced payment to the Contractor; X15: Limitation of the Contractorââ¬â¢s liability for his design to reasonable skill and care; X16: Retention; X17: Low performance damages; X18: Limitation of liability; X20: Key Performance Indicators. ââ¬â¢ NEC, NEC3 Engineering and Construction Contract Option A: Priced contract with activity schedule, 2005) b) Two ââ¬ËYââ¬â¢ Clauses ? ? ââ¬ËY (UK) 2: The Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996; Y (UK) 3: The Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999. ââ¬â¢ (NEC, NEC3 Engineering and Construction Contract Option A: Priced contract with activity schedule, 2005) c) Discussion of ââ¬ËZââ¬â¢ Clauses Z clauses are intended for UK Government clients when using the NEC3 forms of contract. These clauses are additional conditions to the main NEC3 contract and are not intended for independent use. ) Recommendation An example would be for the contractors to request that the secondary option clause ââ¬ËX6: Bonus for early Completionââ¬â¢ to be included in the contract to reward them for possible early completion of the project. However, the client might request to include the secondary option clause ââ¬ËX17: Low performance damagesââ¬â¢ to make sure that the contractors do not rush the job in order to attain their bonus. Aled Rhys Hughes 200714325 4. Conclusion ? ? ? The use of the NEC3 Contract is an overwhelming form of contract favourite and is highly regarded within industry. The use of the NEC3 Contract should be used as a governing document for the tender and subsequent project. The use of the main option clause A should be adopted in the contract document for this project. 5. References ? ? ? ? NEC. (2005). NEC3 Engineering and Construction Contract. NEC. (2005). Demographics Paper
The expected growth of the aging population in Louisiana is expected to grow and will have a tremendous impact on our healthcare system in the years to come. In the past, the increased growth of the aging population was not a problem. Presently it is becoming a problem. One major impact is the need for health care workers. Healthcare workers are decreasing because physicians and other health care workers are retiring. When people get older, they also need more healthcare services. The demand for healthcare services is growing because of the older adult population. Baby boomers from years ago are growing and maturing. In the meantime, fertility rates are declining. This is what is leading to the increased aging population in Louisiana. The aging population is living longer because of new technologies extending their years. Demographics are constantly changing and so are healthcare costs in result. The government is implementing plans to tackle the problems associated with the aging population. It is not an easy task. It is very challenging and difficult to implement successful changes. However, the future is looking very good for the aging population if the government can provide solutions to the barriers caused from the growth of the aging population. According to the U. S. Census Bureau, ââ¬Å"the percentage of persons in Louisiana 65 and older is 12. 3%. â⬠Statistics show how much of an impact the aging population has on health care services and costs. ââ¬Å"The aging of the population of Louisiana is one of the most important demographic trends affecting the state. Estimates show that Louisiana has approximately 436,992 caregivers, who provide more than 468 million hours of care valued at more than $4. 6 billion. â⬠That goes to show just how important it is that fertility rates increase. We are in desperate need for health care workers to care for the aging population (U. S. Census Bureau, 2007). â⬠Not only are we in need for workers, but we are also losing money as the aging population increases. Louisiana is now facing a serious problem that could seriously affect the population and healthcare costs. ââ¬Å"Louisianaââ¬â¢s birth rate is declining, which means our state is aging (Jones, 2007). â⬠Th e number of elderly people is continuing to grow. The numbers of births are continuing to decline. The only solution is to increase fertility rates by having more babies. The impending growth of the elderly population will require Medicare and Medicaid services to change based on the needs of the population. In recent years, healthcare costs were much lower. Healthcare costs have increased because of the need for services among the elderly population. The changing patterns will focus on the needs of the patient. When health care costs go up, many citizens are unable to afford health insurance. Therefore, many patients will go untreated because they are unable to pay for their healthcare costs. There are two problems here. Patients are going without care and their health problems and conditions could get worse because of a lack of healthcare. According to Finger Lakes Health Systems Agency, 2004, ââ¬Å"at the current rate of growth of health care costs and with the population aging, assuming no fundamental changes, 28% of the American economy will be spent on health care by 2030. More than one-third of national health care expenditures are currently attributable to people 65 or older. In the next 20 years, half of all health care encounters will involve older adults. â⬠These statistics show just how much a change is needed regarding our healthcare system and the aging population. It is becoming very difficult for healthcare organizations to plan for such a change. The community has been working to address challenges associated with the aging population. According to the U. S. Census Bureau, 2005, ââ¬Å"figures show that Louisiana will add 333,675 people by 2030, increasing the total population to 4. 8 million. But higher growth rates elsewhere will drop Louisiana from the 22nd most populist state in the nation to 26th by 2030. â⬠This has already begun to happen. Another thing that Louisiana is doing to address major challenges is increasing the wages for healthcare workers. When there is a shortage of jobs, graduate students see this as a golden opportunity to make more money. It gives students motivation and encouragement to get into the field right away. Louisiana is making positive moves to change the way it uses federal Medicaid funds as well. The community is making every effort to combat the problems associated with the aging population, such as the increased health care costs, infertility rates, and need for health care workers. Implementing these changes in Louisiana will be very effective and create a healthy population growth. Chronic disease wellness programs are a great way to decrease healthcare costs and improve healthcare productivity. Because of the rise in health care costs, the government is looking for new strategies to lower healthcare costs. Researchers believe that chronic wellness programs are the answer. ââ¬Å"Wellness programs have proved to be cost effective and the return on investment has been well worth the initial cost (David, 2010). â⬠Helping the aging population develop a healthy lifestyle increases productivity and lower health care costs and insurance premiums. If we do not create chronic disease wellness programs, we will not gain anything. As a matter of fact, we will be paying more for insurance and set back from improved productivity. The need for lowered healthcare costs is pushing government officials to implement chronic disease wellness programs throughout the state and the country. ââ¬Å"Health promotion programs or Wellness programs are geared to improve employee's physical, emotional, and psychological health (David, 2010). â⬠It is better to spend a little money to gain a lot of money instead of losing money due to the lack of healthcare knowledge and motivation of patients and employees. Chronic disease wellness programs improve cash flows for organizations and also keep people healthy. Many people decide to change their lifestyles after these interventions. These programs provide so many great benefits that it would be foolish for the government to reject or ignore them. The aging population is more likely to need healthcare products and services as they age. ââ¬Å"Unfortunately, elderly adults are often confronted with sales gimmicks, advertisements, telephone solicitations, or mailings that promote products that have no value in treating a physical or psychological problem and can, at times, actually be harmful to the individual (Ryder, 2011). It is important for the older generation to feel safe and secure buying the necessary products to help with their medical conditions. In order to market products to patients, organizations can promote them through doctorââ¬â¢s offices. This way the patient knows that the organization selling the product is not a scam. If the product is not being sold through the doctorââ¬â¢s office, the patient can always ask his or her doctor if the product being used is safe to use. When marketing a product, I would point out to the patient that the product is FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved. This will let the patient know that the product is safe to use and does work to treat medical problems. As the young generation grows old, there is an increased need for services and products. The aging population usually have many more doctor visits, prescription drugs, need for beds in hospitals, need for healthcare services and products than the young generation. This is driving healthcare costs up at a remarkably increasing rate. There are many challenges being faced by the aging population and healthcare organizations because of people growing old. Louisiana has a desperate need for more health care workers and more births in order healthcare costs. Growing old is what is causing this. The community is trying to come up with solutions to decrease healthcare costs and promote the need for more healthcare workers. A couple solutions have already been made, such as offering more money to college students who are inspiring to be healthcare professionals, adopting chronic disease wellness programs, increasing fertility rates, and watching how Louisiana spends their Medicaid funds. It is crucial for us to consider how we will be able to care for the aging population and at what cost. As oneââ¬â¢s body becomes frail, older adults are highly likely to be in and out of health care settings for medical care. Health care professionals must be able to provide quality care to the elderly based on their individual needs. A more viable elder healthcare system is essential. The population is growing faster than the economy. Louisiana and its communities are facing many challenges as the population ages. However, there are many steps being taken by government that will help improve our healthcare system and services being provided to patients. It is a difficult process, but in the end is more than worth it.

Challenging the Role of Religion Essays
Challenging the Role of Religion Essays Challenging the Role of Religion Essay Challenging the Role of Religion Essay An Abstract Conception: Challenging the Role of Religion Imagine working with your very best of friends, doing the things that you each truly care about, with no limitations, under no one elses contract or constitution, living happily and productively with others that share your same dreams for humanity. What would you do with that power? Who would you be? Vemma Nutrition does Just this. It offers college students an ideal and opportunity to kick-start their success and obtain the financial security that many never set their sights upon. CEO and founder, BK Boryeko says, Nemma is transforming lives through ultra-premium products, a trong, charitable commitment and a generous compensation plan. It can help you become healthier and happier. If you have a heart for helping people, it may Just be the right opportunity for you. Verve offers each person a family The attainability, social connections, and radical approach combined with the power to create a lasting impact on the world. By interviewing and discussing the hope that Club Verve instills in students at Michigan State, I was able to research and analyze the change that it is currently bringing to the mindset of those impacted. Jake Stap, President of Club Verve on campus, says, l came into school as a freshman to be a doctor in hopes to help people. When I took an enormous chance to Other companies may have a similar plan to sell their product, but Vemmas healthy energy drink, Verve, embodies the very heart of the Exhale. Back to Earth. Reality as we know it. Solid. Familiar. Forecasted. Recorded, trusted, always returning to baseline. Though it is not a perfect world, it gives and takes as we do the same, to maintain our envisioned picture of happiness. Our generation is wakening up. We are wakening up our parents and our friends, our professors and our preachers. In this case, the very action of planting this truth is powerful enough to manifest itself with or without further cultivation in the minds of those that also seek the same ends means. Reality as an illusion, as Freud discusses, encourages audiences to question everything and anything that you believe and have been taught to believe. Do not simplyonly Our unyielding attempt to establish order, in an uncontrollable dimension, is recorded and repeated with painstaking dedication, throughout the history of man. This ultimate search has rooted us secularized civilizations, due to preconceived notions that have been imply passed down to generations. Club Verve at Michigan State University, takes a radical and revolutionary approach to supply the means (money) to attain the end (success and liberation from financial burdens) product, in an outdated, and corrupt world. Members of the club on campus provided my study with the means (interviews, social media, etc. ) to collect research, accurately comparing Verve to religion through social media by attaining quantifiable incentives to trade for an excess of material possessions. The ability to free oneself from the common radition, a sort of liberal enlightenment, seems likely to be the most suitable basis for such a business mans success (Weber, ##). For generations, it seems as if we have been in this plateau of progression- a stand still, stalling the advancement of our enlightenment. Vemma Nutrition and Verve utilize social networking and network marketing combine marketing and communicating in an evolutionary way, making business transactions faster than ever before. Why have we remained so closed off to changing the inputs of our existence by simply manipulating the derivative of our current equation? What is holding us back from this desperately eeded shift in cognition? News channels remove our focus from the fate of humanity to menial happenings and for society to question and actively combat the environments inevitable destruction. Our outrageous, radical, critiqued ADHD generation is now beginning to contribute to society. Young entrepreneurs, innovators, and revolutionary gurus are in fact turning heads and shattering attempts to continue abiding by the old ways of thinking. With an innumerable amount of uncensored information at the tips of our fingers, our generation has not only graduated from the repetitive and rigid education system set in place. As we enture out of our of quantitative, standardized test bubbles and into reality, we are anxious to change what we have seen fail for years. Heres the difference. We are in indeed a generation in pursuit of instant gratification. Why has business been so successful among coklege students? What makes it so powerful? What does it have in common with religion in the first place? Like Freud says, religion allows humanity to attain a sense of control and understanding of that which can never truly be known, easing our fear of the unknown. There is simply no room for the luxury of time to take its course in such a fast paced and plugged in society. The pressure is either going to make you or break, so in the meantime, I have come to conclude that Verve is tool/self-dependent experiencing with reality that can bring the means of living happily into reality by posititely encouraging the you, with an ideal that sounds far to easy to do. the Illusion and psychological wish- discussed by both Freud and Durkheim, the solid in comparison to the definitions and opinions of what religious scholars have theorized to be true. Scholars definitions and perceptions of the religion acts as the blueprint from which our entire expectations of life evolve. Max Weber Club Verve, provides an ideal, family like community, with a mentor to guarantee your success as a distributor. By searching #YPR on Twiter, the impact is undeniable Stephanie Nelson encourages that, by taking better care of yourself, you are waking up a little, and the entire universe benefits more so from one fully awakened soul than that lost by the deadweight the of the 10 for every one leader. Imagine working with your very best of friends, doing the things that you each truly care about, with no limitations, under no one elses contract or constitution, in a symbiotic bubble located near the Southwestern Islands of Utopia. An excruciating flash suddenly draws you away as evil possesses you like a storm building over the sea, waiting to erupt violently. As you are sucked away from this harmonious paradise and thrust into a literal hell, you are suffocating eternally with absolutely no hope or will to exist. Exhale. Back to Earth. Reality as we know it. Solid. Familiar. Forecasted. Recorded, Tweeted, quantifiable. Ahhh, it isnt a perfect world, but its comfortable, controlled, safe. AND UNCHANGING. Why were we reading about breaking edge solar energy technology in elementary school in Current Events Weekly but we all grown and ecome functionaing and contributing members of our society, but are yet to see these crucial technologies manifest in our current existence? Why are we blasted with the same world news over and over again. Our generation is wakening up. We are wakening up our parents and our friends, our professors and our preachers. We have been navigating through cyber space with very undetected knowledge since the days of broadband. Whereas the past generation was bewildered at the cutting edge car phones and brick phones, myself and my peers are annoyed if our friends dont have an iPhone 4 to charge their 5. Clean, crisp, absolute, and certain, we all want to be in the know and aware of ourselves. Who doesnt want to be liked by everyone else? The idea of the unknown and the uncontrollable is perhaps the biggest weakness that has plagued humanity time and time again, to no avail (in my opinion). Something that is unknown to us is uncomfortable, because it is new. Change is difficult for slower moving people to keep up with, these people are often the ones that identify with Eisteins favorite quote of mine, This is my religious study of the dream to exist on this level once again, Just allow yourself to consider the idea of a ociety actually free from without crumbling and indebted leaders, , and its far-fetched Representing only yourself, and those that strive to attain the wisdom of an extremely aged sou, yet subconsciously attached to the mind of all of humanity, working for the well-being of everyone. Impossible to actually occur in the world we live in, if you have even heard a whisper of the worlds current happenings. and answering to those that you actually care to help, desire to help for the well-being of the universe instead of oneself. Tip for Reusing a Turkey Thermometer
Tip for Reusing a Turkey Thermometer Did you know you could re-use the thermometer that comes with many frozen turkeys? It makes sense, when you think about it. Those thermometers contain a ball of metal and a spring. The thermometer is designed such that the metal will melt at the safe temperature for turkey meat (~180Ã °F), releasing the spring and popping up the button. To reset the thermometer all you have to do is dip the tip of the thermometer in hot water (near-boiling will definitely work) to melt the metal. Push the button back down and remove the thermometer from the water, keeping the button depressed. Wait about a minute for the metal to cool, locking the spring back into place. There you go! If you dont cook turkey all that often, remember the thermometer is good for chicken or other poultry, too. Its much smaller than the typical meat thermometer and also much less likely to injure your hand if you go fishing around in a drawer for a thermometer that you rarely use. Youd need to cut open a turkey thermometer to confirm it is metal that holds the spring, as opposed to some polymer, but if is metal inside the thermometer, you should discard any thermometer with a damaged coating. Metals with low melting points tend to be toxic, after all. This also means that if you cut open your thermometer to examine its workings, you should use care and dispose of your experiment out of reach of children or pets.

10 Varieties of Linguistic Siamese Twins
10 Varieties of Linguistic Siamese Twins 10 Varieties of Linguistic Siamese Twins 10 Varieties of Linguistic Siamese Twins By Mark Nichol One of the most intriguing aspects of idiomatic phrases is their fixed nature, an aspect acknowledged in two terms for the class of idioms distinguished by the use of the conjunction and or the conjunction or between the constituent words: irreversible binomials and freezes. (They are also referred to as binomials or binomial pairs, or are identified by the colloquial expression ââ¬Å"Siamese twins.â⬠) Ten sometimes overlapping variations of linguistic Siamese twins (which, because they are often clichà ©s, should be used with caution) follow, including a category for triplets: 1. Binomials connected with and include ââ¬Å"alive and well,â⬠ââ¬Å"nuts and bolts,â⬠and ââ¬Å"skin and bone.â⬠2. Binomials connected with or include ââ¬Å"give or take,â⬠ââ¬Å"more or less,â⬠and ââ¬Å"win or lose.â⬠3. Binomials connected with other words include ââ¬Å"dawn till dusk,â⬠ââ¬Å"front to back,â⬠ââ¬Å"head over heels.â⬠4. Binomials that contain opposites or antonyms include ââ¬Å"days and nights,â⬠ââ¬Å"high or low,â⬠and ââ¬Å"up and down.â⬠5. Binomials that contain related words or synonyms include ââ¬Å"house and home,â⬠ââ¬Å"leaps and bounds,â⬠and ââ¬Å"prim and proper.â⬠6. Binomials that contain alliteration include ââ¬Å"friend or foe,â⬠ââ¬Å"rant and rave,â⬠and ââ¬Å"tried and true.â⬠7. Binomials that contain numbers include ââ¬Å"four or fiveâ⬠note that the linguistic convention is to always state the lower number first (a figurative idiom is this category is ââ¬Å"at sixes and sevens,â⬠meaning ââ¬Å"in a confused stateâ⬠) 8. Binomials that contain similar-sounding words: ââ¬Å"doom and gloom,â⬠ââ¬Å"out and about,â⬠and ââ¬Å"wear and tear.â⬠This category includes rhyming slang, in which a word or phrase is slang code for a word that rhymes with the second binomial term in the phrase (even though only the first binomial term may constitute the slang) and is either random, as in minces, from ââ¬Å"mince pies,â⬠for eyes, or suggestive, as in trouble, from ââ¬Å"trouble and strife,â⬠for wife. 9. Binomials that contain exact or near repetition include ââ¬Å"dog eat dog,â⬠ââ¬Å"kill or be killed,â⬠or ââ¬Å"neck and neck.â⬠10. Trinomials, which contain three terms, include ââ¬Å"blood, sweat, and tears,â⬠ââ¬Å"left, right, and center,â⬠and ââ¬Å"win, lose, and draw.â⬠Take care, when using these clichà ©s, to reproduce them correctly (unless you are deliberately and obviously distorting them for emphatic or humorous effect, as when referring to fashionably ripped jeans as ââ¬Å"tear and wearâ⬠) so that erroneous usage does not have a negative impact on your overall message. Literature Review Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Literature Review - Essay Example This has resulted to researchers and educational scholars into seeking the appropriate wait-time that teachers should give to ELL students. ELL students pose a challenge because of their language-learning disability (Becker and Goldstein, 2011). Understanding of concepts and subject ideas, systematic ideas reflection, critical thinking, and content comprehension of an ELL student on a subject determines the response that a student gives to a question. However, effective learning for learners does not solely contribute to response given by ELL students. Wait time has a substantial effect on the response that an ELL student gives to a classroom question. Existing research by Beyondpenguins.ehe.osu.edu (2013) classifies silence time in a classroom into eight categories including: student-pause time, within-teacher presentation pause time, within-studentââ¬â¢s response pause-time, post-teacher question time, student pause-time, post-student responsive wait time, teacher pause-time, st udent task-completion work-time and impact pause time. Despite the detailed wait-time classification, there has been no concrete conclusion on the specific wait-time required for elementary ELL students to respond to questions. ... ed student participation through volunteering more answers that are appropriate, increase in the analysis and synthesis of the context , which results to students giving evidence-inference responses that are more speculative( Cooper and Irizarry, 2013). Increased wait-time contributes to improved studentsââ¬â¢ self-confidence in responding to questions, increased rate of student asking questions on clarity as well as higher studentsââ¬â¢ achievement. Simply by increasing wait time, especially to students who have to translate the question into their mother tongue and then critically evaluate the questions to give a response, teachers can influence the quantity of correct responses to questions (Cooper and Irizarry, 2013). According to Mohr & Mohr (2007), a teacher should allow sufficient wait time to support ELL students to switch from hearing in a foreign language into reasoning and thinking in their first language, and then giving the response to the question. Additionally, i ncreased wait time has proved to enhance the cognitive techniques applied by a student to give responses. Relationship between Increased Wait-Time and Critical Thinking Several studies indicate that teacherââ¬â¢s wait time is often associated with the thoughtfulness and comprehension of a student answer to classroom questions (Huntley, 2008). Notably, teachers do not give sufficient time for students to internalize, think critically, and se comprehensive knowledge to respond to classroom questions. Teachers who only give elementary English Language Learners (ELL) students a few seconds to respond to classroom questions evoke student recall on a subject rather than critical thinking (Cruz and Thornton, 2013). In many occasions, ELL students translate the question into the first language to understand it

A Conversation Analysis from the film Babel Essay
A Conversation Analysis from the film Babel - Essay Example A film has a series of short stories that do not have conclusive endings. It is important to note that a convenient plot holds the shots in different places together. The intriguing plot of the movie depicts a series of much-unconnected stories of different persons and societies all over the world. In this film, communication and lack of it form the basis for my research on conversation analysis. In the movie, an American female tourist is mysteriously shot and wounded while on tour in the desert of Morocco. The two tourists, Richard and Susan argue bitterly following lose of their beloved son. Ironically, the shooter remains a puzzle and sets the impetus for a series of short stories that in the end make the plot of the whole film. This touches on the aspects of how different world languages, different societies, and cultures vary. In the film, different languages are spoken by different characters altogether. While her husband is trying to save her in the middle of a desert, their nanny in Mexico takes the coupleââ¬â¢s children to a wedding. In another part of the movie, a 16 year-old adolescent girl, who also happens to be deaf looks for somebody to break her virginity. She does this in her quest to be understood the way she wants. The unending communication barriers brought about by different linguistic backgrounds is a theme of great relevance to conversation analysis.... Sacks et al defines turn taking as one party talking at a time. There is a minimization of gaps and silences too that enhance the feature of turn taking. He continues to argue that there is formulated system that makes these two techniques possible. In this case, one party speaks independently at a time hence minimizing the gaps and silences. Sacks et al. continues to state that a turn-construction unit (TCU) is the basic unit of a turn. (Brown, 2007, p. 224) argues that oral language and discourse is marked by exchanges. In this case, few sentences spoken by one participant are followed and built upon by sentences spoken by another. Whenever turn-constructional unit unfolds, a possible completion point is achieved. The possible completion point is considered as the transition point for any speaker. The waiter utilizes turn-constructional unit in the conversation below. 01 A waiter brings a plate and some cutlery 02 Waiter: (In broken English)) ^You want to order? --- Sentential TCU In line 02 above, the waiter in the restaurant initializes the conversation by asking a question. The arrow and the question mark indicate this. These two symbols tell us that in order for the conversation to move to the next level, an appropriate response must be given. In spite of talking probably in broken English, both Richard and Susan are able to get the conversation going by appropriately answering to his initial question. The sentential TCU provides the transition point for the next prudent conversation. 03. According to Give me liberty by Eric foner, explain why he thinks the Essay
According to Give me liberty by Eric foner, explain why he thinks the Civil Rights Movement challenged the very idea of freedom - Essay Example Foner (95) asserts that freedom at the time meant; being equal to the white race or not being enslaved. This freedom is contrasted with the other kinds of freedoms such as the freedom of speech, movement, among others that are already guaranteed by the American Constitution. Since the idea of freedom is narrowly focused, the author moves on to detail that even after the slaves are freed, they might still not have equal access to opportunities in life. In this case, the pursuit of freedom would change form so as to respond to the new realities. Then the focus would be on freedom with respect to economic power, or even freedom with respect to employee rights (Foner 100). According to the Foner (45), these changing social conditions are primarily responsible for the change in the meaning of freedom. They keep shifting its boundaries so that in the end, the idea of freedom is extremely amorphous. The author believes that instead of asking for freedom, civil rights activists were better off demanding liberties. This could have made their pursuit more focused and could have resulted in greater gains (Foner

And Data Interpretation - Statistics Project Example It will show: systolic BP and diastolic BP taken from the same set of subjects either while supine or standing. 2). Using Excel, calculate three new columns, giving for each subject their MABP supine and standing and their increase in MABP when standing rather than lying supine. From the new columns, again using Excel, calculate, for the whole class, and for males and females separately, the mean, SD and SEM for MABP for supine and standing positions and for the increase in MABP. You do not need to print your columns of raw data. Present all these summaries, including the numbers of subjects and units of measurement, in a single table. It should also include a title and a legend which states briefly how the experimental data were obtained (i.e. summarises what was done in the practical). Round the values up to an appropriate number of decimal places. 3). Complement the numerical statistics with a graphical display: From the MABP increase values, construct a grouped frequency table for the whole class, showing the frequency and percentage frequency at 5 mmHg intervals. Remember that % values should add up to 100. Draw by hand the histogram. It is normal in biosciences for these to be plotted as percentage frequency, NOT % freq density. Remember to label the axes and intervals and include a title or legend so that the graph is readily understandable. [4 marks] 4). Perform a t-test to compare the two positions for the whole class with respect to mean arterial blood pressure. Are the differences significant? Marks will be deducted for not explaining your choice of test or your conclusions, for not showing your working or for serious errors in calculation. Equity and Trusts Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Equity and Trusts - Essay Example 500 or part of it. The equitibility of the words ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ I regard the money in the account as much yours as mineâ⬠by Brian shall be construed with reference to the conduct of parties. A trust is a binding agreement between a testator and the trustee for the benefit of the beneficiary. Accordingly, for there to exist a valid trust, three certainties must be present. The ââ¬Å"certainty of wordsâ⬠which reveals the intention of the testator, certainty of ââ¬Å"subject matterâ⬠(property bequeathed) which in this case is the money and the ââ¬Å"certainty of objectsâ⬠(the intended beneficiary) as upheld byââ¬Å"Lord Langdale MRâ⬠as he was then in ââ¬Å"Knight V Knight (1840).â⬠Besides, Lindley L J in ââ¬Å"Re Hamilton [1895]â⬠stated that the intention of the testator in every wording or disposition should as a rule of prudent practice is construed on the merits of each case. Whereas the current case presents quite a problematic and conf licting loyalty in the application of equity and trust, it can be regarded as a constructive trust. According to Lord Denning in ââ¬Å"Hussey v Palmer (1972)â⬠this is a trust imposed upon by the Court whenever justice, conscience or good objective judgment demands it to be vested in the beneficiary. From conduct of parties, Brian had the intention to create a valid constructive trust. ... Itââ¬â¢s also correct that Premafacie, the words themselves are not sufficient enough to create a valid trust but coupled with Brianââ¬â¢s conduct, there is a manifestation of that intention by his assurance to Amanda. For example, in the case of Paul v Constance (1977), money was placed into the account ââ¬Å"sole name of Constance.â⬠As it were assurances were made to Mr. Paul that the money in the account was jointly owned. Paul argued that based on that construction, it was sufficient that the wording created a joint ownership of the account. It was held that the conduct of the parties created an intention of joint ownership. Similarly in ââ¬Å"Re Vandervellââ¬â¢s Trust (No 2) (1974)â⬠, the money in the settlement was used in purchasing shares. This was done in exercise of a prevailing option for the intended beneficiary. The Court held that the conduct of these parties where upon they used the money to pay dividends into the intended settlement was sufficien t evidence of the intention to create a valid trust although no specific words were used. Therefore, in the current case, although itââ¬â¢s difficult to state the words in the phrase ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ I regard the money in the account as much yours as mineâ⬠as sufficient to create a valid trust, itââ¬â¢s also correct from the above case law that this wording coupled with the conduct of Brian created a valid constructive trust as sufficient certainty for that requisite intention . I advise Amanda to institute an equitable claim on the above basis because equity ââ¬Å"looks at the intent rather than the form.â⬠Itââ¬â¢s the spirit behind the conduct of the parties which is important rather than the form of the statement. She will first seek an injunction to maintain the statusquo until the Court decides discretionary

A Clausewitzian Analysis of the Thirty Yearââ¬â¢s War Essay Example for Free
A Clausewitzian Analysis of the Thirty Yearââ¬â¢s War Essay When applying the Clausewitzian paradoxical trinity paradigm to the Thirty Yearââ¬â¢s War, we see that the catalyst that sparked much of the conflict during that time was driven by civil unrest of the ââ¬ËPeopleââ¬â¢ engendered by fear of religious persecution. Beginning with the divergence of religious and secular leadership resulting from the Protestant Reformation which was exacerbated by the rigidity of Catholic monarchy, we see how widespread fomenting dissent within the German States lead to the decline of the Habsburg ruling family. In his work, On War, Clausewitz describes the essence of war as a continual interplay between the ââ¬Ëparadoxical trinityââ¬â¢ of the people, the government, and the military. As we apply this framework to the complex and varied influences of the early 17th century, this model provides clarity in determining the root causes that shaped this era an era that has come to be characterized by the rampant internecine warfare of religious and political factions of the time. The Protestant Reformation, which had begun to take traction with many of the expansion-minded German nobility, set the stage for the conflict between Catholic and Protestant factions throughout the German Provinces. With the signing of the Peace of Augsburg in 1555, Lutheranism had been officially recognized by the Holy Roman Empire. The major outcome of this treaty enabled the Protestant movement in Germany to claim lands once belonging to the Catholics. This result had great appeal to the more secular rulers throughout Europe who sought to disentangle themselves from papal oversight and influence. Under the rule of the Holy Roman Emperor Mathias, Protest and Catholic factions had gained equity of representation and influence throughout the Hapsburg controlled regions. This unification was driven, in part, by the larger Muslim threat presented by the Ottoman Empire. This truce, however, was an uneasy one with all the characteristics of a 17th century Cold War between the two religious sects, and as the balance shifted with the rise of a new monarch, each side began an arms race to defend their interests from the other. The appointment of the intransigent Catholic monarch, Ferdinand II, posed a threat to Protestants throughout the various Habsburg controlled territories. Religious hegemony of individual States was the preferred condition of German rulers in the early 17th century. The religion of the ruler shall be the religion of his subjectsâ⬠was a motto that was very near and dear to many of the European rulers of the day. This rang especially true among the Catholic territories where the Church exercised much greater political influence than their Protestant counterparts. So when the balance of Protestant and Catholic controlled States was disrupted with the ascension of Ferdinand II a widely acknowledged Catholic zealot to the throne of Bohemia it brought a face to the fears of the Protestant nobility. In an effort to limit his religious edicts, the Protestant Bohemians entreated for religious freedoms of their newly throned monarch. The harsh dismissal of these entreaties was the spark that ignited the powder keg that Central Europe had become, and the subsequent ââ¬Å"Defenestration of Pragueâ⬠resulting in the death of Ferdinandââ¬â¢s representatives by Protestant rebels signaled the start of uprisings in Hungary, Transylvania, and the rest of Bohemia. This uprising spread throughout Europe, drawing in both political and religious powers to become decisively engaged. The unresolved religious dissent among the people and the Habsburg ruler served as a lodestone for conflict throughout Europe and lead ultimately to the decline of the Holy Roman Empire into several small autonomous territories. Early successes by the Hapsburg against the Bohemians, and later the Palatinate States, led to the direct involvement of France and Holland allying against the Hapsburgs. Their efforts were later supported by England, Sweden, Denmark, Savoy and Venice. These State actors all had their own agendas but ostensibly acted in support of the Protestant rebellion whose secular distancing from Church control appealed to both the ruling classes and commoners alike. The war ravaged the German countryside and some estimates have nearly half of the population were killed, wounded, or displaced, with some areas such as Wurttemberg losing nearly 75% of their population. The Peace of Westphalia which was signed in the fall of 1648 signified the end of the war. Alsace became part of France, while Sweden gained much of the German Baltic coast, while the Emperor had to recognize the sovereign rights of the German princes, and equality between Protestant and Catholic states, while Spain, in a separate peace, finally acknowledged the independence of the Dutch Republic. â⬠The Habsburg crown was now, more than ever, subject to the auspices of the Imperial Diet, also termed the Reichstag or German Parliament, which exists to this day. When viewing the root cause of the Thirty Yearââ¬â¢s War under the Clausewitzian perspective, we see that the ââ¬Å"Peopleâ⬠node of the paradoxical trinity was the most influential during that time. This war is often termed the War of Religion as religion was either the root cause of conflict, or the excuse used to mask political machination in efforts to expand power and influence. But in truth, religion was merely the vehicle by which contention among the commoners and landowners took shape to facilitate change of the current governmental structure. Upon the conclusion of the war, after the smoke had cleared and the damage was tallied, Habsburg power was irrevocably shattered and France emerged as the new epicenter of European influence and might. But the consequences extended beyond the immediate outcomes of the war. The resulting Peace of Westphalia changed the very relationships between citizens and the State, extricating religion from the government and laying the foundation for modern civic relationships of todayââ¬â¢s democracies.

Labovââ¬â¢s Model of Narrative Analysis
Labovââ¬â¢s Model of Narrative Analysis William Labovââ¬â¢s model of narrative analysis differs from some of the earlier approaches in that his method focuses on oral narrative instead of written text. Earlier linguists, such as Ferdinand de Saussure, believed in a structural approach. This meant that language had to be approached as a fixed, clearly defined set of symbols, which furthermore had to be studied in isolation. However, later linguists, among them Uriel Weinrich, Labovââ¬â¢s mentor, believed that the structural approach failed to assist us in understanding ââ¬Å"the transition of a language from state to stateâ⬠(Labov 1972:xv). Labovââ¬â¢s focus has been to study language as it is spoken, as a fluid and constantly changing dynamic. Most of Labovââ¬â¢s model of narrative analysis is based on his belief that ââ¬Å"one cannot understand the development of a language change apart from the social life of the community in which it occursâ⬠(1972:3). He feels strongly that observing and recording sound changes is not enough to understand the process of changeââ¬âthat one has to view that change within the context of the community in which it is being made, as it is being made. Using this theory, he carefully chose communities where he felt he could do this most effectively. He conducted the first of several in-depth studies in Marthaââ¬â¢s Vineyard, a small, closed island community located in Dukes County, Massachusetts. Labov saw Marthaââ¬â¢s Vineyard as an ideal study site primarily because it was very self-contained. In addition, it was physically isolated, located three miles from the mainland. For his next series of studies, Labov selected parts of New York City. One particular area he focused on in the New York City study focused on Black English as it was used in certain parts of the city, specifically Harlem. Although Harlem did not have geographical distance from New York the way Marthaââ¬â¢s Vineyard did from Massachusetts, racial and socioeconomic boundaries made it an isolated community in its own way. The main points of Labovââ¬â¢s model were first published in 1972 in an essay entitled ââ¬Å"The Transformation of Experience in Narrative Syntax.â⬠In this essay Labov introduces and explains what he sees as the six main parts of a narrative. He discusses each part as a tool which we can use to analyze narrative patterns, to help recognize recurring themes and ideas. The six main parts of Labovââ¬â¢s model are: abstract; orientation; complicating action; evaluation; resolution; and coda. It is not necessary that all six of these be present in every narrative; for example, some narratives will not have an abstract, while others may not have a coda. Additionally, these components need not appear in a specific order, and each may be present in a variety of waysââ¬âthese factors are also considered in the final analysis. Labov uses the term ââ¬Å"abstractâ⬠to refer to the introductory part of the narrative. This may be, literally, an ââ¬Å"abstract,â⬠or a brief summary of the events; or it may be simply a line or two that will spark the readerââ¬â¢s interest. The role of the abstract is to attract the listenerââ¬â¢s interest, and to get the listener to want to hear the rest of the story. The next stage is called ââ¬Å"orientation.â⬠During this phase the speaker gives the listener information about the setting of the story. For example, the speaker will introduce and describe the people or characters who will interact in the story, as well the setting (the place the action occurs) and the time frame. For the story to be valid and understandable to the reader, it is essential that he or she be informed of the time and place in which the narrative unfolds. Following orientation is the ââ¬Å"complicating action.â⬠This refers to the actual events of the narrative, the occurrences that move it ahead. Complicating actions may be physical actions. They may be also be statements spoken aloud, or they may be thought acts ââ¬Å"Evaluationâ⬠refers to the point, or reason, the narrative is being told, and it can be done in a number of ways. ââ¬Å"Evaluationsâ⬠may be specifically and clearly stated, or they may be implied. ââ¬Å"Internalâ⬠evaluations are those revealed while the story is taking place, while ââ¬Å"externalâ⬠evaluations take place outside the immediate action of the story (for example, after the story is told). Another evaluation technique is the ââ¬Å"embedded evaluation.â⬠This can be an explanation offered by one of the people in the story, or by the storyteller directly. In addition, it may also be an event in the story. Following this is what Labov calls the ââ¬Å"resultâ⬠or ââ¬Å"resolutionâ⬠: this, basically, is the conclusion. At this point the narrator indicates that the story has come to a close, that a final action has occurred. Finally, there may be a ââ¬Å"coda.â⬠By ââ¬Å"codaâ⬠Labov means that the narrator points out the relevance of the story by connecting it with every-day life, or with other events or actions that fall outside the story frame. The coda does not always have to be present. It may also be present without being explicitly stated. One of the issues to be discussed concerning Labovââ¬â¢s model for narrative analysis is the method of data collection, since ââ¬Å"the means used to gather the data interfere with the data to be gatheredâ⬠(Labov 1972:43). The interview itself may be considered ââ¬Å"public speech.â⬠However, even within this realm, there are other conditions to be considered. For example, does the relationship of the interviewer to the interviewee affect the latterââ¬â¢s speech patterns? Does the use of a recording device affect the intervieweeââ¬â¢s choice of words, perhaps make word selection more formal than it ordinarily would be? One way of monitoring this is to compare the subjectââ¬â¢s speech patterns during the course of the interview with his or her speech patterns outside the interview setting. For example, the interviewer could also observe the subject while he or she is relaxed with peers or family members in a less formal setting. Labovââ¬â¢s model has strongly influenced language studies since its introduction in 1972, and it continues to be influential in additional settings. With the widespread growth of the internet, we now have a new, informal sort of communication. Linguist Michael Toolan suggests that Labovââ¬â¢s model is a useful tool in the analysis of internet writing. Internet writing is often less formal than academic or other types of writing, but more structured than spoken language. Thus, Labovââ¬â¢s model remains effective today. As language itself continues to grow and change, it is quite probable that Labovââ¬â¢s model will grow to accommodate that change, and to continue to be a useful tool in years to come. Bestowed Existence :: essays research papers
<a href="http://www.geocities.com/vaksam/">Sam Vaknin's Psychology, Philosophy, Economics and Foreign Affairs Web Sites Knives and forks are objects external to us. They have an objective - or at least an intersubjective - existence. Presumably, they will be there even if no one watches or uses them ever again. We can safely call them "Objective Entities". Our emotions and thoughts can be communicated - but they are NOT the communication itself or its contents. They are "Subjective Entities", internal, dependent upon the existence of one observer - us. But what about numbers? The number one, for instance, has no objective, observer-independent status. I am not referring to the number one as adjective, as in "one apple". I am referring to it as a stand-alone entity. As an entity it seems to stand alone in some way (it's out there) - and be subjective in other ways (dependent upon observers). Numbers belong to a third category: "Bestowed Entities". These are entities whose existence is bestowed upon them by social agreement between conscious agents. But this definition is so wide and all encompassing that it might be considered useless. Religion and money are two examples of entities which owe their existence to a social agreement between conscious entities - yet they don't strike us as universal and out there (objective) as numbers do. Indeed, this distinction is pertinent and our definition should be refined accordingly. We must distinguish "Social Entities" (like money or religion) from "Bestowed Entities". The latter - in stark contrast to the former - are not universal, they re dependent on the society, culture and period that gave them birth. Not so with numbers. Numbers are Platonic ideas which come into existence through an act of conscious agreement between ALL the agents capable of reaching such an agreement. While conscious agents can argue about the value of money (read, about its existence) and about the existence of God - no rational, conscious agent can have an argument regarding the number one. Apparently, the bestowed entity category seems to free itself from the eternal dichotomy of internal versus external. It is both and comfortably so. But this is only an illusion. The dichotomy does persist. The bestowed entity is internal to the group of consenting conscious-rational agents - but it is external to any single agent (individual). In other words, a group of rational conscious agents is certain to bestow existence on the number one.

Death in Audenââ¬â¢s Funeral Blues, Forcheââ¬â¢s Memory of Elena, and Dickinson
Death Reflected in Audenââ¬â¢s Funeral Blues, Forcheââ¬â¢s Memory of Elena, and Dickinsonââ¬â¢s Last Night that She lived Death is a natural and inevitable part of life. Everyone will experience death, whether it is of a loved one or oneself. In W.H. Audenââ¬â¢s poem ââ¬Å"Funeral Bluesâ⬠(1003), he describes such a catastrophic event and the drastic effect that it has on his life. It is interesting how people choose to accept this permanent and expected event, death. Similarly, Emily Dickinson has written many poems about death, such as ââ¬Å"The last Night that She livedâ⬠(843), which describes a family waiting for a woman or girl to die and the dreary and depressed mood that exists within the household. Mourning is considered a perfectly healthy reaction when someone who is deeply loved and cared about passes on, and this is illustrated in ââ¬Å"The Memory of Elenaâ⬠(1070-71) by Carolyn Forche. She writes about the events following a funeral and also flashes back to the actual moment that a wife has watched her husband die. W.H Audenââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Funeral Blues,â⠬ Carolyn Forcheââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Memory of Elena,â⬠and Emily Dickinsonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The last Night that She livedâ⬠are all poems which share death as their subject matter, but differ in the fact that they discuss death in a unique style with a variety of literary devices to make them more effective. Upon reading these poems, I could relate to each strongly on a personal level. Each poem expresses a different view of death and the different stages of acceptance and grieving. When I was younger, my grandmother passed away. I was quite fond of my grandmother and she and I had a close relationship. When she passed away, I was devastated and went through a series of phases and emotions, much like those descr... ...otions are expressed in the poems ââ¬Å"Funeral Bluesâ⬠by W.H. Auden, ââ¬Å"The Memory of Elenaâ⬠by Carolyn Forche, and ââ¬Å"The last Night that She livedâ⬠by Emily Dickenson. Although each poet writes with his or her own literary techniques, such as rhyme scheme and hyperbole, symbolism and repetition, and dramatic pauses, they all have made the experience of death seem real and personal to the reader, and that is why their works are considered great works of modern, contemporary, and classical poetry. The Colony of Maryland
The colony of Maryland is a very unique colony in many different ways. The colony was formed in 1634 by two hundred emigrants, mostly Roman Catholics. With the founding of Maryland came the first permanent proprietary government of America, that is, a government by a lord proprietor, who, holding his authority by virtue of a royal charter, nevertheless exercised that authority almost as an independent sovereign. Maryland is surrounded by the three colonies Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Delaware and it surrounds Chesapeake Bay, flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. The climate of colonial Maryland varied; it had four distinct seasons, with relatively hot, humid summers and cool or cold winters. Some of the occupations of Maryland were blacksmiths, weavers, farmers, butchers, wheelwrights, carpenters, and several others. In the year 1639, a representative government was established in Maryland. It was crude in form, but possessed the prolific seeds of a sturdy republicanism. The freemen chose as many representatives as they pleased. So did the proprietor. These, with the governor appointed by the proprietor, and a secretary, composed the government of Maryland. The ethnic groups in the colony were mostly English and Dutchman. There were several social customs in colonial Maryland. For example, family life in Maryland was different from a modern family. Children were employed as apprentices at age 7, and each member of the family has a specific role in the homeââ¬â¢s finances and maintenance. Most of the people in Maryland were Catholic, in which made the colony one of the few predominantly Catholic regions among the English colonies in North America. Maryland was also one of the key destinations where the government sent tens of thousands of English convicts punished by sentences of transportation. The colony had no difficulties with the native population, actually it was the opposite. Archihu, chief of the Potomac Indians, welcomed the colonists with open arms in 1634. The natives taught the settlers how to build wigwams and palisade fences for their villages. Inside their villages, the settlers learned how to establish gardens and grow such vegetables as maize, beans, squash, potatoes, and pumpkins ââ¬â foods which they had never seen in England. The settlers were taught many more things from the Native Americans, but the populations of the Native American tribes decreased significantly due to the settlerââ¬â¢s diseases that the natives had no cures for.

Harris Bergeron & by the Waters of Babylon Essay
In the story, Harrison Bergeron, one learns that the author, Kurt Vonnegut, does not like the way society is. He does not like how people judge one another because one is not as attractive, or smarter, or funnier. He portrays this idea into the story by creating a society full of people that are equal. For example, in the beginning one gets to know that George is actually really intelligent as was all Hazel, but not as much as George. George cannot be smarter than Hazel or anyone, so to control the way he thinks he has to wear a mental handicap that receives different sounds to scatter his thoughts (Vonnegut, p. 34). Although, many people are fine with the way this society is being ran, in one section George explains to Hazel what would happen if he took his handicaps off then he will not be equal with everyone else, it is not fair to Hazel either because she has to keep wearing hers, ââ¬Å"And pretty soon weââ¬â¢d be right back to the dark ages againâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Vonnegut, p. 3 7). However, Harrison Bergeron, a 14 year-old boy, does not agree with this. ââ¬Å"Now watch me come what I can become!â⬠(Vonnegut, p. 39). He believes people should not be equal and be able to use the skills others do not have. On page 39, Harrison storms in and announces he is the emperor, and then he chooses his Empress and removes the handicaps from her and himself. Harrison does not want to be ruled by someone but rule himself; he wants to change the way things are being ran in this town. In the story By the Waters of Babylon, John, a son of a priest and becomes a priest himself, lives in a society where the people have many different believes. For example, many things are forbidden like going east, going into a Dead Place, unless one is a priest or a son of a priest and to search for metal, cross the river and look at the place that was once the ââ¬Å"Place of Gods.â⬠On page 292, Johnââ¬â¢s father is reviewing all of the forbidden places. ââ¬Å"All these things are forbidden,â⬠I said, but it was my voice that spoke but not my spirit,â⬠(Benet, p. 292). ââ¬Å"My heart was troubled about going east, yet I knew that I must go.â⬠(Benet, p. 293). John knows going to these places is a sin, but for some reason he seems to knot agree with this. As the story progresses, John is now a man and goes off into his journey. He searches for signs; his first sign was an eagle that went east. John knows it is a sin to go east, but his gut is telling him he should go. However, he believes this was a bad spirit trying to convince him to the wrong thing. His next sign were three deers, as well as a white fawn, another sin. Then he sees a black panther which attacks the white fawn. This represents a ying and a yang, good and evil. John says it is better to die than loose his spirit (Benet, p. 294). At the John decides he will travel to the Place of Gods, even though he might die he wants to know the truth. Once John arrived he realizes all those stories he was told as a boy were false. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ the tales say, that the ground burned forever, for I have been thereâ⬠¦.. It is not true either, what some of our priests say, that the island covered with fogs and enchantments.â⬠(Benet, p. 296). John then explains that the Place of Gods is a regular dead place, with cracked roads, damaged buildings and high towers. The knowledge John has gained burned in him, he said on page 296. At the end of his journey he realizes that the god s were regular men that lived before him. He explains to his father there were never any real ââ¬Ëgodsââ¬â¢. John wants to share this knowledge with the people of his town; however his father says it is better to tell the knowledge little by little because if one ate too much truth at once, one may die of the truth. (Benet, p. 301). John says he learned that being a priest, ate knowledge too fast. (Benet, p. 301).

Kingship in Macbeth Essay
The theme of kingship is one which can be see constantly throughout the play. This makes sense as the play is ultimately a tribute to King James I, who was king when Macbeth was written in 1606. King James strongly believed that becoming king was a divine right and that they themselves, as kings, were Godââ¬â¢s representatives on earth. All these aspects can be seen from beginning to end of Macbeth and we see how when this order of kings is changed by unnatural means, everyone suffers. During the course of the play we see the traits of four kings: Duncan, Macbeth, Edward and Malcolm. Through the reign of each of these kings, we are shown clearly how a country is only stable if the king is good and virtuous. In Shakespearean times, a king had absolute power and the welfare of the state depended strongly on him. All people were similar to King James in the belief that kings were appointed by divine right, and had to possess the king becoming graces of, ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢justice, verity, temperance, bounty, perseverance, stableness, lowliness and devotion. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ When the play opens, we see Duncan as king. He himself admit that there ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢is not art to finding the mindââ¬â¢s construction in the face. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ This inability to judge people well, ultimately leads to his downfall. The original Thane of Cowdor, ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢a man in whom I [Duncan] placed upmost trustââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ rebelled against Scotland when under the reign of Duncan, something which Duncan could not foresee. Similar happened with Macbeth. Duncan trusted Macbeth and saw him as a ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢brave and valiant cousin. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ Duncanââ¬â¢s trusting of Macbeth lead to his own untimely death. We can see clearly Duncanââ¬â¢s weakness as king; he trusts too easily. We can also see the traits of a good king in his character as his punishes those who commit treason (Thane of Cowdor), and rewards those who are brave and loyal (Banquo and Macbeth), ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢go announce his present death and with his former title greet Macbeth. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ It is clear that people respected Duncan as king and his godliness can be seen in the words expressed by Macduff when he is murdered, ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢ most sac religious murder hath broke opeââ¬â¢ the lordââ¬â¢s anointed temple and stolen the life hense. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ Ironically Macbeth himself praises and acknowledges Duncanââ¬â¢s qualities, ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢ Duncan hath borne his faculties so meek. ââ¬â¢ When Macbeth becomes king, we see the opposite to Duncan. Macbeth reigns with terror and has constant feelings of paranoia, trusting no one, ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢to be thus is nothing, but to be safely thus,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢we have scorched the snake, not killed it,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢our fears in Banquo stick deep. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ Macbethââ¬â¢s reign cannot be succeeded by his children as he became king through a sinful and unnatural act of regicide, ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢upon my head they placed a fruitless crown. ,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ During this time, regiside was considered to be one of the most unforgivable crimes possible- the killing of Godââ¬â¢s chosen representative on Earth. This act alone show that Macbeth will rule as a king of terror. His reign is characterised by instability, he has upset natural order and this can be seen reflected in the natural world around him, ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢thou seest the heavens as troubled with manââ¬â¢s act .. by the clock tis day and yet dark light stangles the travelling lamp. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ The chaos and disorder seen in Scotland under Macbethââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢s rule is reflected in the natural world. As king, Macbeth focuses on the wrong things, he tries to achieve strength and power and puts this ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢vaulting ambitionââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ before his duty to lead Scotland. Macbeth could in no way be considered divine, a clear contrast to ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢meekââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ Duncan. The character of Macbeth is associated with evil and witch-craft and his is known to others as a ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢tyrant whose sole name blisters our tongues,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ synonymous with power, although he has no legal or God-chosen right to have it. In Macbeth we see a king who deviates completely from all the ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢king becoming gracesââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ and qualities of a good king, and as a result, his country suffers greatly, ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢every morn new widows howl, new orphans cry. ââ¬â¢ In the play, we never actually meet Edward the Confessor, King of England, but through descriptions from Malcolm we can see clearly that he embodies all that a true, virtuous king should. He is associated with ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢heavenââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢graceââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ and all things ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢saintly. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ Edward is said to possess the a bility to foresee the future and to heal the sick, he does not abuse these powers like Macbeth, but instead puts them to good use, ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢ he hath a heavenly gift of prophecy, and sundry blessings hang about his throne. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ We see in Edward a king who is a good judge of character, unlike Duncan. Edward welcomes Malcolm into his court and agrees to help him despite many thoughts that Malcolm is the one who murdered Duncan. Edward can see Malcolm innocence and kindly offers him a safe haven where he can regroup. The qualities of kingship seen in Edward are that of honesty, kindness and holiness, all adhering to the fore-mentioned ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢king becoming graces. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ This example of a most excellent king would have impressed King James of England at the time as it was widely known that King James was a descendent of King Edwardââ¬â¢s. Malcolm, Duncanââ¬â¢s son and rightful heir to the throne, does not become king until the final scene of the play but still we are left feeling Scotland is in safe hands. Malcolm shows his qualities earlier in the play and from this we can see just what kind of king he is going to be. The anointing of Malcolm as king of Scotland restores natural order after the hellish reign of Macbeth. We feel as if Malcolm will be fair and honest as king and we know he understands what is expected of him, as he was in fact the character who listed the ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢king becoming graces such as justice, verity, temperance â⬠¦ ââ¬â¢ We see he is a better judge of character than that of his late father as before trusting Macduff, he tests his loyalty to Scotland. He also understands how the power associated with being in king can easily go to oneââ¬â¢s head, no matter how honest they may seem previous, ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢ a good virtuous nature may recoil in an imperial charge. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ ⢠Before we learn of any of this, we know Malcolm resides in the palace of King Edward, this association alone causes us to automatically characterise Malcolm with goodness and honesty. Malcolm is respected and liked by the people, this is show by the fact that he was able to bring together an army of ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢ten thousandââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ to fight against the ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢tyrantââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ Macbeth. With Malcolm as king, we see peace and unity once again being restored to Scotland, ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢Hail king of Scotland. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ The only criticism I would have of Malcolm is the fact that he rewards directly, all those who have been loyal to him,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ my thanes and kinsmen, hensforth be Earls. ââ¬â¢ This action reminds us of Duncanââ¬â¢s hasty reaction of appointing Macbeth as Thane of Cowdor. He rewarded immediately Macbethââ¬â¢s seemed bravery but paid most dearly for it. I could not help but wonder if Malcolm may perhaps suffer a similar fate. We see in all the kings mentioned in Macbeth, many differences. These differences allow us to contrast the characters and explore deeply the theme of kingship in the play. In Macbeth, w e see an unnatural king which causes chaos in his country. He rules with terror and evil. Duncan was a king who rules with peace and honesty, but his trusting nature unfortunately lead to his untimely death. In both Malcolm and Edward, we see good kings who appear to possess and understand the qualities needed to be king. Although it can be said that a fault may be seen in Malcolmââ¬â¢s character, this is no more than a suggestion, and I feel that his positive traits as King overwrite this. At the end of the play we are left feeling satisfied that has been left in safe hands.
